South Korea Bolsters Defence Against North Korean Drones with Advanced Laser Technology
South Korea is taking decisive steps to enhance its defense capabilities in response to recent drone infiltrations from North Korea. Amid escalating tensions, South Korea's Ministry of National Defense (MND) has announced plans to deploy advanced laser weapons designed to counter these threats effectively.
The initiative, confirmed by the MND, focuses on deploying a cutting-edge laser system known as "Block-I," developed by Hanwha Aerospace. This technology is set to be operational by the end of the year, with further installations planned in the coming years. The Block-I system offers a swift and precise means to neutralize drones, boasting a cost-effectiveness of just USD 1.45 per shot.
The decision comes in the wake of several North Korean drone incursions into South Korean airspace, which have raised significant security concerns. South Korean Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup emphasized the urgency of the project, highlighting the efficiency of laser technology compared to traditional missile defence systems.
Joseph Dempsey, writing for the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), noted challenges faced during a previous incident in December 2022. Despite a five-hour military operation involving combat aircraft and attack helicopters, South Korea failed to neutralize five North Korean drones that breached its airspace. Dempsey highlighted the difficulty in tracking small reconnaissance drones with radar, noting that current air defences are not optimized for such low-flying, slow-moving targets with small signatures.
These developments underscore South Korea's ongoing efforts to bolster its military readiness amidst North Korea's increased missile tests and reconnaissance activities. The use of laser weapons represents a strategic shift towards more effective and responsive defence capabilities tailored to modern security challenges.
The deployment of Block-I laser systems is expected to provide South Korea with a robust deterrent against future drone threats, reflecting a proactive stance in safeguarding its airspace and national security.
